A Device That Uses Nanotech to Smell 17 Different Diseases on your Breath

A team of scientists from five countries have collaborated their efforts to make it possible to detect disease through an analysis of exhaled breath. The specialized Artificial intelligence system, named NaNonose, features nanotechnology-controlled sensors that are trained to detect pattern in exhaled breath that could be indicators of disease.
While still in the experimental stage, it has been able to identify conditions such as Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic kidney disease, prostate cancer, lung cancer, pre-eclampsia toxemia and a number of others, with a varying degree of accuracy for each disease. The nanotechnology sensors are trained to mirror the nose, allowing for detection of a number of different compounds.
But how does it work?
As you exhale, there are certain pattern indicators of various conditions in your breath. You will emit oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon and vapor. Exhaled breath can also contain up to 3500 volatile organic compounds, according to a study published in the “Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology” in 2011.
By analyzing the composition of these volatile compounds and comparing the structure of inhaled breath to identify disease blueprint, this nanotech-based technology could allow for a great way to detect disease.
